It is so easy nowadays to just ask Google for the answer. The internet has brought knowledge to our fingertips. Sometimes though, we find ourselves in a rabbit hole of random facts that we find on the internet. We can't get these 40 wild and mind-blowing truths out of our heads and we're certain they'll change the way you look at things, from oranges to brain cells. Keep reading to find out about some truly crazy things this world has to offer.
1. Pigmented Peppers
Green peppers turn yellow, then orange, then red. They are all actually the same pepper, just less ripe. This is why they taste sweeter when orange; they ripen they get sweeter!
Hot peppers are a whole other story, so don't get us started. Try to have fajitas without tasting the difference in the colors now.
2. WTF v. LOL
WTF will automatically translate to "what the f*ck" in our heads, but LOL will just stay as LOL, not laugh out loud.
Yes, we tested it and looked at previous text messages and it is true. For some reason, our mind likes to spell out the profanity but sticks with letters for LOL. LMAO also stays as LMAO but GTG will translate to got to go. Weird, right?
3. Together is Separate
Our lips touch when we say the word "separate" but ironically, they do not touch when we say the words "together". We now grant you 10 seconds to stop reading this article and mouth the words for fact-checking.
Speaking of together, it really is crazy that we all used to be that close to one another pre-pandemic. More food for thought..
4. Toasty Toast
Toast is just something cooked, cooked again. We wonder what absolute genius took a bite of bread and decided to cook it again. Life-changing stuff.
There is the infamous avocado toast, the toasted cheesy bread, the tomatoes bruschetta. All of these delights are basically just recooked bread.
5. What the Duck
We are guilty of groaning every time our phone autocorrects to "ducking". When this happens, we all imagine little agitated ducks. Ducking actually means crouching down and has absolutely nothing to do with ducks.
Yes, we too forgot this was a real word. Un-ducking-real.
6. Alexaaaaaa ?!
This is a first-world problem, but we always get our Alexa and siris mixed up. How wild that we live in a time when we can get the names of our "servant robots" confused.
Now, parents have to think twice before naming their daughters Alexa, especially if they already own the amazon device. Here Jeff Bezos goes again, constantly infiltrating every aspect of our lives.
7. Be There Or Be Square
We've all heard the saying. Either from a parent who screams that our dinner is getting cold or a friend who wants to have a hopping birthday party. Well be there or be square actually means we're not a-round. Woah, just woah.
I bet the dude who made this poster didn't know the meaning behind the phrase when he added the black square and blue emoji.
8. Gravity
Sir Isaac Newton was at the mere age of 23 when he discovered the law of gravity. He discovered it while watching apples fall from a tree.
The reason the young genius was watching the apples is that there was a black plague in the city and he went to the countryside to finish his studies. Maybe this pandemic will produce some geniuses, or we'll all just keep baking banana bread. But hey, baking is science isn't it?
9. Womb , Tomb, and Bomb?
So let us get this straight, womb is pronounced woom, and tomb is produced toom, but bomb isn't pronounced boom?!
Yep, this baby is just as confused as us. The phonetics make more sense to anyone. Can someone change this? Or maybe even get rid of bombs all together so there will be no more booms?
10. Like A G6
We sure remember that catchy tune. What we don't remember is ever realizing that the capital letter G just looks like a spinning arrow. Now we cannot unsee it.
The arrow is spinning counter-clockwise and is now very easy to never not see. Sorry, a lot of double negatives in there, but you get the point. Anyway, another fun fact about the letter is the meaning of calling someone a G used to stand for gangster but now means they are a truly admirable homie.
11. Snap, Crackle, Pop
Is this the theme song of Kellogg's rice crispy cereal? Because cereals delicious as they have the right to theme songs. As crazy as that is, this is even crazier: The sound made when we snap our fingers is actually just our middle fingers hitting the palm of our hands.
Oh, snap is how we feel about that one. Even Iron Man seems a bit caught off guard.
12. Krabby Patties
This one shakes us to our core. Watching the TV show, we assume Krabby patties are mini hamburgers. In reality, Krabby patties are CRAB CAKES. Makes sense right? But boy did it throw us off guard.
The secret formula, which includes crab, was released by nickelodeon after the series ended. It's a bit cannibalistic if you ask us... fish eating other fish. It's only OK when SpongeBob eats Krabby patties because he's, well, just a yellow porous sponge.
13. The Mall
The Mall. What a blissful place filled with wonders. A certain group of internet users believes it is the mall because you are going to "them all" referring to the stores. We are not sure if it is etymologically correct but it is too good not to share.
Also, it just makes sense and is good marketing considering only sociopaths will walk into a mall and only go to one store.
14. ABCDEFG
Remember learning the ABC's? So do we! Because frankly, how can we forget a good chunk of our childhood? Well, turns out, there is really no reason the alphabet needs to be in order at all. If all the letters were jumbled up nothing would change besides the tune of the song.
Another wild thought is that all of the books we have ever read in English are just composed of 26 letters in a different order. Take that Gone With The Wind!
15. Paint
We who live in small homes should reconsider painting them because.. every time you paint a room, it gets smaller. Square footage matters.
Instead, choose the original paint color very carefully if possible so that there are only additions to the home, not limitations.
16. Eight Ate Nine
We were eight when we first noticed the eight in the middle of the eight of diamonds card. Just kidding, it was now. Poker will never be the same when the eight of diamonds comes out.
Some more fun facts about a deck of cards are that the first deck was created in imperial china during the 9th century and face cards were modeled after real people in history.
17. Teletubbies
Ok, we had to calm our younger selves down for this shock so prepare. Teletubbies are actually 10 feet tall. Yep, you read that right.
They have stilts in the suite, making them almost double the size of an average human. Pretty frightening for small children, if you ask us.
18. Ants on Ants on Ants
Get this. The weight of all the ants in the world is equal to the weight of all the humans in the world. Seems impossible but it is not. Sure, there are billions of ants and the average human weighs a million more times than an ant, but all the ants combined still end up equal to the weight of all of the humans combined.
We don't feel so high and mighty anymore when we crush the ant pile in our kitchen, knowing that they are our equals. Also, treat animals with kindness!
19. Bikini Bottom
Spongebob is just full of life-changing realizations that the internet cannot stop talking about. The houses in Bikini Bottom are car mufflers that fell into the ocean due to pollution.
Thank you, creators of Spongebob, for taking a stand against climate change well before the rest of the world realized it was a problem. Squidward is a true activist.
20. Crazy Conchs
This is what a live conch looks like. Exactly this. We cannot believe it is not a cartoon character. It basically looks like it should be in spongebob.
Next time someone gifts us with a conch shell necklace or tells us to eat the conch soup, we may say no thanks, have you seen the fellas?
21. Han Solo or Shrek?
We kinda think Shrek is just Han Solo as an Ogor when he's not in space. Prove us wrong.
They have the exact same outfit and honestly, who could tell which character wears it best? The joker and Mclovin from Superbad also seem to be fashion icons of the same taste. What a great stylist with such a versatile customer base!
22. Halfsies
You can split something in half over and over again and it will never become anything, meaning that there can be an infinite amount of universes and worlds in this item. This applies to everything from a simple grape, to a cell in our bodies, to the entire universe. Grab a piece of paper and try. Splitting it in half continuously won't get rid of any of the matter.
Matter is neither created nor destroyed. It is anything that has mass and takes up space. We figured we'd through in a little science to this list to keep us on our toes, also called phalanges.
23. Pavlovian
Now that we talked about matter, we shall speak of psychology. Remember Pavlov? He's the dude who trained his dogs to eat using the sound of a bell and created positive reinforcement that applies to animals and humans alike. Well, Pavlov himself probably thought about feeding his dogs every time someone rang a bell.
Every time I walk in my house my dogs think they are getting fed and the guilt I have results in me giving them treats, so I think my dogs have pavloved me instead!
24. Devil On My Shoulder
We all have the devil and angels on our shoulders guiding us into making the right, and wrong decisions occasionally. These little fellas are just the voice inside our head. That voice inside has grown up with you and at one point was a child.
That voice will continue to carry us to old age and provide us with the best and worst ideas to come.
25. Its Getting Hot In Here
Never have we seen so many thermometers as we have these days with the pandemic, but let us fill you in on a hot take. Thermometers are speedometers for atoms.
Just like the speedometer on our cars measures the miles per hour we are traveling, the thermometers measure the speed of the atoms circulating in our bodies, which in turn results in temperature. Pretty neat right? What isn't cool is having a fever and being sick. So stay safe out there and wear a mask!
26. Eye See Through
We always close our eyes before we go to sleep but if we are not in a completely dark room some light always seeps in. Eyelids in fact do not completely block out all light.
We think this may be a biological way to warn us if something happens when we are sleeping like maybe a fire, or so that we can sense the sun rising in the morning before alarm clocks. Or, maybe humans just aren't made to perfection.
27. Crimson Clothes
Ever notice that after our clothes become wet they become darker? It is one big moist mystery why wet clothes are darker even though water has no color.
A light red shirt can turn crimson the second a bucket of water is dumped on us. The exception to this is white clothing where water makes us transparent, so whoever did the ALS ice bucket challenge in all white might have regretted that decision.
28. President Planet
Our planet seems to be the only planet with a plan, as we know so far. Earth is a planet that tells other planets if they are planets or not. If that isn't a shower thought then I'm not sure what is.
Maybe out in the universe there are other alien species who claim to be the only planet with life and they don't acknowledge earth at all. I hope we find out in our lifetimes, because Pluto is not too happy being demoted from planet to star.
29. National Anthems
It is custom for most nations to have a national anthem. We grow up singing it in school every morning. It is a bit weird though that every country basically has a theme song its citizens must memorize.
Speaking of theme songs, wouldn't it be awesome if the theme song to Friends was a country national anthem?
30. Personal Perspectives
Two like-minded people can be looking at the same thing but have completely different perspectives on it. This applies to human beings as well. A different version of you exists in the minds of everyone who knows you. Even childhood friends who met you at the time will have different viewpoints of you, even if you treat them the same.
This is an important lesson when it comes to the differences we see in people. We must always try to put ourselves in other's shoes. To test this theory go to a park (socially distanced!) with a friend and ask them to name five things they notice. I'm sure those five things will be different than your five things.
31. Astounding Art of Aging
We all have our own journeys through time and space. Our age in years is how many times we have circled the sun, but our age in months is how many times the moon has circled us. Ok, that seems more confusing than the Mathew McConaughey movie Interstellar, and that took us for a loop.
And just in case you forgot, a calendar year is the amount of time it takes for the earth to make one orbit of the sun while a day is the period of time the earth completes one full rotation around its own axis. A leap year is a 366-day long year to keep us all on track with the solar system. Got it?
32. Mad Math
Pie day was our favorite day in school because we were able to eat a bunch of pie. Pi on the other hand is the continuous range of numbers starting at 3.14. This number is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle. Even though Pi is infinitely long, we have all been Pi years old. This phenomenon occurred a little after our third birthday.
Also, in this current moment, we are as old as we have ever been and as young as we will ever be. So soak all that up soon!
33. Skyscrapers Are Just Tall Sand Castles
Nowadays it is very "in" to eat, live, and breathe "naturally". The reality is, everything is actually natural, some things just take nature to the next level. Chemicals are natural, nature is chemical, and human beings are natural so everything we do is natural. The point is, both concrete and glass are mostly made up of sand which forms skyscrapers. This being said, skyscrapers are just super-duper tall sandcastles.
Architects are basically little kids in the sandbox but instead of using tiny shovels, they use much bigger and more technologically savvy tools. Next time we walk into a big office building, we will be tempted not to splash some water on the walls and watch it come toppling down like the waves with sand.
34. Sign Me Up
Communication is just awesome. There are thousands of languages in the world, from universally know English, to tribal languages in the mountains. All spoken languages travel at the speed of sound, while sign language travels at the speed of light.
'I love you' in sign language is depicted above and is super easy to learn. Next time we want to tell a loved one how we feel, we should start practicing sign language. Another cool fact about love and language is the Bachelor had its first deaf contestant this season and she received the first rose. The more we think about languages, the more astounding it is that Helen Keller learned to say the word water without sight or sound.
35. Significant Sun
There is always light at the end of the tunnel, or at least light in the darkness. Nighttime is the natural state of the universe and daytime is only caused by a nearby radiating ball of flame we call the sun. If it weren't for the sun, it would be total darkness. Most planets in the universe are in total darkness and that is why no human being or live form can survive. We need the sun to survive.
Sunsets are also just the best part of life if you ask us. Since Sweden is so close to the North Pole is has a summer solstice where the sun is visible 24 hours a day. While the sun doesn't set at all over summer, in winter in Sweden there is complete darkness. So basically, living in certain parts of Sweden is like living on a different planet for certain months of the year.
36. Stranger Memories
If you are a kind person, and we are certain all of our dear readers are, some stranger somewhere still remembers you because you were kind to them when no one else was. Maybe you let someone use the bathroom ahead of you or got them an item at the grocery store, either way, they may still be thinking of you fondly to this day. Always, act with kindness as you never know whose day you are making.
A study was done in Chicago in 2019 where participants were asked to speak to strangers on their commute. Most people wanted to chat and ended up enjoying the commute more and feeling some sort of human connection. So instead of being nervous to strike up a conversation in a waiting room or on a bus, say hi as I'm sure they don't think your weird and are willing to talk to pass the time.
37. Fishy
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs was a movie we all wish was reality. Imagine, constantly being rained on by spaghetti and pizza and whatever food we desire. Who would ever purchase an umbrella? Well, this is what fish who live inside aquariums get to experience. After watching Nemo, we don't love the idea of pet fish but it makes us feel better to know they are always experiencing raining food each time the owner throws some nibbles into the water.
I have never been to a Chinese restaurant that does not have an aquarium, and next time I go, I will be watching the fish in paradise as I nibble on my spring roll wishing more was falling from the sky.
38. Alien!
Space conspiracies are our favorite. Niel Armstrong was the first human being on the moon. Neil A. What is that backward? Alien!
The real question is, did we send Neil Armstrong to the moon or did we send him back to his home? Or maybe we brought him back to Earth from the Moon? Or maybe it was all a green screen? No, we believe we went to the moon, but was it a human?
39. Brain Cell or Universe?
We are nearing the end of our list so let us get especially deep for this wild thought. A microscopic image of a brain cell and a wide image of the universe look eerily similar. Perhaps, the universe we are living in is merely a brain cell of another living creature? Or maybe even in our brain cells, tiny people are living in their own universe?
Yes, we know this may sound incredibly far-fetched but so is the idea of the big bang theory and evolution and we believe those to be a reality. The universe is 13.7 billion years old and spans a diameter of over 150 billion light-years so who is to say a part of it doesn't lie within our own brains?
40. Orange We Glad?
Yes, we are glad that when we take the time to peel an orange we are greeted by beautiful pieces that were pre-sliced by nature. The reason for this is that the entire fruit is the ovary of the originating flower and the seeds are the ovules. The slice of the fruit is associated with the seeds and is called the carpel. Grapefruit, another citrus fruit, also has the same science behind it, hence it is presliced.
Oranges are also a fabulous source of vitamin C and lower the risk of heart disease and kidney stones. We thought we would end the list with a fact we can think about daily as we drink our OJ in the morning, with no pulp, please!
