Protest signs are usually made for political or social movements. It gives protestors a way to communicate their feelings, opinions, or support to other people in the community or to political parties. Usually, you’ll see a lot of creative signs at Pride parades. It gives the gay community a way to show the world their emotions towards different situations or unequal rights. The best part about Pride signs is that they always have the most amazing glitz and glam added to them. Check out these signs, they definitely have you more than chuckling!
1. Taco Tuesdays
“Gay agenda” was created from Christian religious rights groups as a dismissive way to refer to the advancement of social approval and laws that actually treat homosexuals as people. We just can’t understand why someone would ever be bothered by this.
This guy took ‘Gay agenda’ as the best gay calendar any homosexual would love to see. A great twist on how the Christians used it. And of course, besides being gay every day, he could not forget to add in Taco Tuesdays.
2. Nicely Dressed Jesus
This man caught the eye of many at this big Pride event. Nicely dressed like Jesus, with a sign that says “I’m cool with it” in front of a crowd of Christians protesting. His confidence levels are off the charts!
Obviously, this man is gay and many Pride events have their fair share of Christian protesters giving their opinion about homosexuality. He just gave them a funny alternative representation of their opinion.
3. Rainbows
Who doesn’t love rainbows? The rainbow has become a symbol of pride for the gay community. When the flag comes out, it's noticeable, bright, and lets gay people live their truth.
The rainbow flag became a symbol for the gay community in 1978, when an artist, who was openly gay, and a drag queen (of course), created the first rainbow flag. We think this girl is doing the right things in life and is just cute with that poster!
4. Choose Love
There is a lot of animosity towards the gay community that comes from religious groups. This is quite upsetting as gay people have so much love to give to everyone, as should religious people.
We’ll admit this sign is quite thought-provoking. There is nothing immoral about religion just like there is nothing immoral with being gay. Although this sign has a point. You don’t get the choice to choose to be gay as you would choose your religion…
5. Glitter
Ever had glitter thrown at you? Well, it really never goes away. Ever. Weeks will go by, and you will still find some glitter stuck in your hair and your clothes even after laundry.
This quote on the sign actually comes from the fabulous Lady Gaga. These people make a great statement using this quote. Being gay does not go away, just like glitter, it shines, never goes away, and shouldn't!
6. Covfefe
The gay community often gets a lot of backlash from people. It seems only fair that they get to give a little bit of backlash back. After all there are people who don’t want equality for all.
There is a catch to this sign, the first letters of each word make up the word ‘covfefe’. That's a misspelled word from one of Trump’s tweets. Many people gave the word its own meaning, and this Pride supporter gave a fabulous one.
7. Corduroy Skirt
We know that most gay men have a great fashion sense. So while standing next to a girl wearing a corduroy skirt and a “Homosexuality is a sin” sign, this guy decided to join in and put up his thoughts on her taste in fashion.
If you are going to declare that being gay is a sin, gay people also have the right to mention what other things in your life are sins. One for the gay, nay for the corduroy skirts.
8. PFLAG
PFLAG is a great organization for gay children and their parents, families, and friends that originated in the US started a global trend. Their community can be found at many Pride events, holding the ‘proud’ or ‘blessed’ with gay children signs.
Parents who support their children, especially gay children, are so important in this world. We just love these parents with their happy faces, PFLAG shirts, pride signs. And look at the colors of those signs!
9. Miserably Married
There’s always that long-standing joke amongst many married couples, that married life is miserable. Is it really though? Regardless, this sign makes sense that homosexuals should also be allowed to be given the chance to see if it is as miserable as they say.
Straight people take for granted the freedom they have and options available to marry a partner. Sadly there are still so many countries worldwide that do not support gay rights, including marriage.
10. Figs
Ever heard the story of Jesus and the fig tree? Well, basically Jesus was hungry and found a fig tree, there were no figs on the trees. So, he cursed the tree so that no one could eat from it ever again. Being hungry really does make people cranky.
But this sign is not about fig trees. It is a play on words for the messed up derogatory word used to refer to gay people. For all the homophobes out there...Jesus said FIGS!
11. Hi Mom
Well, that is one way to come out to your parents. A big sign at a Pride event. With an “oh well” expression on your face. It is just as priceless as her sign.
Although this sign is more recent, it was first used at the first gay pride gathering in Philadelphia, in 1972. Before Pride events, gay and straight people would gather by the Liberty Bell to fight for equal rights. It was known as “annual reminders” – this then eventually turned into what we know today as Pride parades!
12. Simba
Yes, you read that right. Remember when Timon and Pumba took Simba in? They were both seen as Simba’s two adoptive fathers or perhaps uncles for those who disagree. However, he still had two male figures raising him.
Gay men and women are known for adopting children or even having their own and raising them just fine like Simba had! On top of that, they usually offer children a better life than what may have been set out for them.
13. Oprah
“Everybody’s getting a marriage!” – those famous “You get…” words from Oprah’s show, used on a sign for gay rights. Signs like this, which are used at Pride events to showcase how unequal gay rights are, make our day.
Marriage equality is still disregarded in way too many countries. People fight for gay rights still to this day and will continue to fight for them until everybody gets a marriage!
14. Small
There has been a lot of animosity towards Donald Trump, especially when it comes to gay rights. Trump did not highlight LGBTQ issues concerned with gay people and their rights and managed to dodge answering when questioned about it.
This sign shows how gay people had perceived his lack of positive action towards the LGBTQ community. A bit of a play on words, “Do these jeans make my a** look big?” instead, with the board shaped like Trump, “Does this A** make my country look small?”... Pretty witty...
15. Fabulousness
The truth is out, being gay is not really a choice. It’s in your biology! It is not a "side effect" from social pressure, child abuse, and it is definitely not a sin.
But do you know what is a choice? Being fabulous is. You could choose to be fabulous or not, but the gay community will be. Fabulousness is what the gay community around the world is all about! What’s the harm in that?
16. Liza
Liza Minnelli, the Liza referred to in this sign, got married 4 times. Two of those husbands she married, were actually gay. It seems a bit unfair that she could marry two gay men.
The same two gay men couldn't marry each other if they even wanted to, in most of the countries. What kind of right does one have to tell other people who they can love and marry?
17. Brunch
Hillary Clinton supported gay rights and marriage equality. During the presidency of Barack Obama that she was a part of there were countless legislative victories for the gay community.
In the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary promised to continue her policies in the same spirit.
In the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary promised to continue her policies in the same spirit.
So yes, chances are if she had become president, these protestors would not be protesting for their rights. They would instead be sitting in a nice place enjoying a nice little brunch.
18. Safeword
Remember ‘covfefe’ from a few posts up? Well, here it is again. Only this time, it is this guy’s safe word. As we mentioned, the word has many meanings to it which people have given to it themselves.
This guy dressed in a BDSM outfit gave it his own hilarious meaning to ‘covfefe’. It is also a crafty way of using Trump’s mistake to throw it back at him at a Pride event while knowing Trump was not that supportive of gay rights.
19. Brittany
In some countries, sometimes cities, gay marriage is actually legal. Luckily for this man, he has been able to get married. Although some might question gay marriage, he has kept his marriage going for 4 years.
Brittany Spears’ first marriage lasted merely 55 hours. It is crazy when you hear of more straight couples having strange relationship issues when a lot of critics would expect to hear that about gay relationships.
20. Grow
This is such a sweet sign. No matter who you love, make sure it makes you grow. Gay people get criticism often for who they love, however, does anyone ever think how them loving who they want to love actually makes them grow as people.
Allowing them to peacefully love who they want gives them the freedom to feel safe in life. Why can straight people love whoever they want, but when gay people love other gay people, there is a problem...
21. Sad
Ellen DeGeneres has been a long-standing pioneer for LGBTQ rights. Ellen’s coming out was not smooth sailing. She received a lot of criticism from hate mail to death threats and her show was canceled a year later.
So yes, when people have to still protest for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, it would of course make Ellen sad. Something she has fought so hard for and although a lot of change has come, it is not enough.
22. Ring
“If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it...” - Should’ve, could’ve, would’ve… but no, there are still so many gay people around the world who simply can’t.
A lot of Pride events or protests use a lot of signs which help raise awareness for the lack of gay rights. Athough some gay people are still not be able to put a ring on, we sure they enjoy living life to Beyonce’s soundtracks while fighting for change.
23. Heroes
David Bowe’s song ‘Heroes’ expresses the tale of a German couple. Every day the couple met under a gun tower next to the Berlin Wall. The couple was committed to being together in spite of all the obstacles.
This lyrically strong song fits in well with the battles gay people face every day. Just like the struggle described in the song, despite the obstacles, the fight for equal rights and change is strong and alive.
24. Outrage
When someone gets engaged, you would expect them to be happy, or excited rather than ‘outraged’. Well, unfortunately, for gay people as we know, it is much harder for them to get married.
A lot of gay people opt to travel to different countries to get married, where it is legal. It is quite a mission for them to be able to get married if it is not allowed in their own country. So yes, the outrage seems fair.
25. Glitz
Ah, here comes President Trump again. We see him featured a lot in Pride signs. It’s quite clear that his lack of LGBTQ support really upset a lot of people.
We know that gay men love a bit of glitz and a good hairdo. So, to play on overcoming no support from Trump, this sign portrays a play on his often-mocked hair. And why not just add a glitter lip-gloss for fun too…
26. Cher
Cher is an icon in the LGBTQ community. She has always shown support to the community. Her son also came out as transgender in 2011. They really did go all out on sharing the Pride love with this sign.
We also love the creative way they chose to spread a positive message about love and gay rights. Using Cher as a play on the word ‘share’ and with the cut-out being in rainbow colors and in the shape of Cher.
27. Drink It
Having two signs as the card game "Cards Against Humanity" is just brilliant. Not sure what this guy is trying to say? Let us break it down. Westboro Baptist Church is an American hate group.
The hate group it’s quite famous for pushing their homophobic beliefs. “Drink the Kool-Aid” is a phrase with a strong negative undertone hinting that if you believe in a cause you are willing to die for it. Now combine the two.
28. Frustration
Tell us about it. Where do they even start? Some countries have public gay exclusion, supporting gay rights lands you in jail, gay bar raids, employment discrimination, housing discrimination, unequal healthcare, forced gay conversion therapy...shall we go on?
For years and years, people have been putting up a good fight for gay rights and for a change in society. So, we really understand the message of frustration this sign sends.
29. Woke
Sleeping beauty should be sleeping in this sign, but she is not. She is ‘woke’. Not woke as in awake but woke as in being aware of the social issues around the LGBTQ community and good for her!
This sign portrays that more people need to be educated on the social issues that gay people are dealing with. If sleeping beauty can wake up then the rest of the world should.
30. He Said
Throughout life, there will always be people who do not like something about someone in different situations or just because. And the problem is that people make up reasons to hate. Unfortunately, if you are gay you will encounter that a lot more.
This guy is showing the world that there is nothing in the Bible where Jesus says about gay people. So all that hate and yelling “Jesus said…” is really one big nonsense that people make up in their own heads.
31. Unapologetic
People often get caught up in what others may think of them and find themselves never actually living life the way they want to. Instead, they get caught up in what others want and live that way.
You should never ever have to apologize for who you are. Especially if it comes to a part of a person which cannot be changed. Like this girl, who is unapologetically queer, we should all be ourselves.
32. Coming Out
Coming out of the closet is a metaphor for a person revealing their sexual orientation or gender identity to others. However, when Harry Potter (not gay) escaped his little closet room, he was able to explore a whole new magical and exciting world that was awaiting him.
Some may think that when a gay person comes out, they might just have the same experience as Harry. Being able to feel free and adventurous and roam the world without having to hide who they are.
33. Announcement
Imagine a world where straight people needed to come out to their parents. For gay people, that is their world. This sign portrays just a small part of what gay people need to do in their lives.
Coming out and letting their family or friends know their sexual orientation. The world needs to come to a point where being gay is ok and you don’t need to make an announcement about it.
34. House music
Although this sign may be old, seeing as Trump is no longer president, perhaps this guy does have a point. The world needs more gay artists who make music that is not house music.
There are currently tons of DJs who are gay, creating house music. Although there are other musicians making other genres, it is really funny how this guy is playing on the inside joke of gay DJs and house music.
35. Not That Much
If you have not caught on by now, all gays just want is to be able to marry each other and have the same rights to be happy in life. It is not that much to ask for really.
As long as no change has been made, we will keep seeing signs like this. And the longer they will not be able to know whether marriage is really all that miserable.
36. Smart Sign
Caught out with this sign? How is it that when two women are together in pornography, then it is okay, and no one says anything about it? But if two women are in a relationship, then there is a problem.
We really hope this smart sign gets a few people who are anti-gay rethinking their outlook on things. After all, it is quite thought-provoking and does make a solid point.
37. Goodie
There is no way one can’t just love how her happiness is radiating in this photo. This is an oldie but a goodie. Another well-known song used for a Pride sign.
Although the song actually goes, ‘Ain’t no lie, baby bye bye bye’ this woman has used it in relation to her being bisexual. And as all gay people should, this amazing woman is so proud of her sexual orientation.
38. Over It
The phrase, ‘just get over it is used so often. For gay people, they are often told to just get over their ‘gayness’. Well for this wonderful gay guy, he is no longer getting over it.
A lot of gay people feel shame which comes from people’s criticism of their sexual orientation. It is liberating to see this guy’s sign, as a way of taking control and no longer caring what other people may have to say.
39. Not Cool
Why did Dorothy want to leave Kansas? Well, it was a place where no one wanted to spread love, and plus that nasty woman wanted to take her sweet dog away to be put down. Not cool.
Why do gay people relate to Dorothy wanting to leave? Well, there still seems to be a fair amount of judgment around gender identity and sexual orientation within the government, court, and society.
40. Not Yours
People really seem to be quite bothered by other people’s doings, especially when it comes to gay rights and marriage. If two gay people get married, how does it affect other people unrelated to them?
So many choices made for gay rights are made by people who are not gay or do not understand the hardship they go through. If gay people are to be married, let them and if their marriage is ruined, let that be on them, it does not affect anyone else, does it?
