Finding do-it-yourself projects that can be done around the house or at work is a favorite pastime of men and women all around the world. From new decks in the backyard to full renovations of the family's main washroom, there are no projects left unattempted. Where there is a will, there is a way, but all because there is always a way, it does not necessarily mean that it's the right way. A large number of DIY projects do not quite go the way they are expected to. Here are 40 of the DIY projects that make us wonder why they were even attempted to begin with.
1. 'Gravity's For Chumps'
For some reason, the majority of first-time 'do-it-yourselfers' tend to choose the washroom as the first room they renovate themselves, which may explain why the one detail of this expert diagram was misread.
One would hope that whoever it may have been that decided to do these shower renovations themself, had at least, double and triple guessed the elevated drain decision.
2. 'Pssst. Up Here'
Nine times out of ten, giving a pet a gift is more exciting for the person than for the animal. This person got a little too excited while planning this one out.
The good news is, the cat will probably look at this as a new challenge. The bad news is that this cat's person now has to worry about finding their feline friend stuck between two rooms and attacks from above.
3. 'Connect The Dots'
Washrooms may be the first room to go under the knife during DIY home renovations, but the first major project outside of the house is usually something a bit simpler. How hard could it possibly be to build a deck?
It looks as though the individual who built this deck didn't quite realize how long the project would take and going down the homestretch, they got lazy. That would be so frustrating to look at every day. One would hope that they would have had that fixed, or perhaps covered it in deck-furniture.
4. 'Occupied'
Doors and washrooms appear to be the DIY projects that people seem to have the hardest times with. This person must have thought that they could tackle any project when they decided that replacing the washroom door was the right task for them.
Well, at least it's a nice door. The handle is flashy and looks to be securely in place. I know that you're not supposed to hide anything from family, but sometimes a little privacy is nice.
5. 'The Situation Has Been Handled'
Deciding on which door handles to use when upgrading the look of one's house can be a very tough endeavor. Should it be the classic spherical shape or perhaps the more family-friendly handle that one could grab onto?
The simple steps in DIY home repairs are usually the ones that people seem to skip over. What should have been a ten-minute job, ended up being at least twice as long and had a few added frustrations.
6. 'Peek-A-Boo'
With the ever-increasing number of doors in people's homes these days, the number of complications that could arise during a simple procedure like door replacement surgery has become more evident.
This operation was not the success that they had hoped it would be. The guy who replaced this door was convinced that doors were a one size fits all type thing. His wife will not soon be letting know how wrong he was.
7. 'They Waterboarding Someone In There?'
One of the good things about doing a lot of home repairs by one's self is that there are usually spare parts around the house in case of emergency.
Following the first time this shower was used, the residents of this place probably went out to the hardware store for a real shower head. It's hard to believe that anyone would willingly subject themselves to more than one kitchen tap shower experience.
8. 'Stumped'
Door stoppers have been diversified over the years. It used to be, that if someone needed a door propped open, they would simply put something heavier than the door itself in the way. In school, most of us grew up with the little wooden or rubber stopper that would be wedged into the door in order to keep it ajar.
Sometimes it's better to stick with what's familiar instead of trying something new. These guys were stumped as to what went wrong when they first made use of this new model of door stopper.
9. 'That Tap Is On My Half'
For those who enjoy having their own personal space in the washroom, a double vanity is a fantastic idea. It allows for both partners to have their own counter space with their toiletries kept separate for organizational ease.
In theory, it's a great idea to try and put in the vanity by one's self. In practice, this looks more like The War of the Roses has taken place than home renovations.
10. 'Preserving Their Youth'
It is difficult for some parents to grasp the idea that their children are no longer children. Mums and dads have gone to great lengths over the years in their attempts to create memory walls at home.
This one, however, is borderline psychotic. If one were to try really hard, they would be able to understand why this could be considered cute, but they would have to try really hard.
11. 'It Breathes Really Well'
When it gets to be too hot outside, people will do almost anything to their clothing in order to make the heat more bearable. Pants can be turned into shorts with one quick alteration in very much the same way that a long sleeve shirt can become a short sleep shirt in no time at all.
This DIY tanktop takes it to a whole other level. As creative as this may appear to be, it takes a certain kind of person to wear underwear as a top. I'm not sure I'd even want to know what happened to their other shirt to warrant this becoming a reality.
12. 'Going Mobile'
DIY home renovations are one thing, but when it comes to additions to the home it is always best to seek the help of professionals.
Whoever completed this fantastic piece of work was probably seeking the help of a different type of professional after their partner saw what they had done with the old van. This one gets an 'A' for effort, but if someone steals this car, the new living room is going with it.
13. 'Life Finds A Way'
DIY nail-polish ideas have become quite the rage on social media these days. With all the time that has been spent at home over the past year, it's understandable that people have been attempting to re-create some of their favorite film moments as nail-patterns.
Re-creating the amber-encased mosquito from Jurassic Park would be cool as a wall mounting, or a bookend, not as nail-polish. This lady took fandom to the next level.
14. 'What Kinda Wood Was That?'
It is generally a good idea to keep any old desks or tables that are made of good quality wood. One never does know when it may come in handy to have some strong and sturdy wood around.
For instance, instead of replacing the car's bumper, why not just slap some good old hickory or mahogany onto the back of the Toyota. The next trip these people take to the mechanic might just be because their car is rotting.
15. 'Please, Get Comfortable'
Many people find it difficult to throw away old clothing. Some individuals turn old winter clothes into new summer clothes while others look for the more out-of-the-box ways of recycling things.
This DIY chair made out of old jeans is quite unsettling to look at. I'm not sure if it's because it looks like an upside spider or a really messed up hand, either way just go and spend the thirty bucks on a new bean bag chair.
16. 'Feeling Flush'
If doing any home repairs by one's self, it is advised to check the internet for a minimum of one picture of what the final product should look like. A simple search could save a lot of embarrassment later on.
What could they possibly have been thinking when they were securing this seat to the toilet? One would have to believe that this person has either never used a toilet before, or they just really like the extra back support.
17. 'Feeling Snacky'
During the past year, I think it's rather safe to say that most of us have spent at least one night watching a movie at home with some popcorn or chocolates. With all of the time spent at home lately, people have had to get rather creative when missing their favorite snacks.
When the cupboard is stocked with M&Ms and peanuts and the craving hits for some peanut M&Ms, forget the microwave, it's time to grab the glue gun and get to work.
18. 'Who's Got Small Hands?'
All the food lovers out there will understand the joys of any new kitchen renovations. It's important to remember that every detail of the new kitchen is just as important as any other.
Being able to get into only one of these drawers at a time is a problem that could be worked around. Not being able to open the drawer more than a few inches might be a bit of an issue.
19. "Go, Go, Gadget Legs"
Renting a fully-furnished apartment or house is a fantastic way to avoid lugging heavy furniture from place to place. One of the benefits is that if new furniture is needed, the landlord will usually be the one to replace the item. These next guys informed their landlord that they were in need of a taller table, and he was kind enough to oblige with a little of his own DIY magic.
A few problems were solved here. For starters, the table is definitely taller, it won't be rolling away anymore, and the tenants learned that sometimes it's better just to buy a new table.
20. 'These Boots Were Made For Mocking, And That's Just What We'll Do'
Using old clothing to make new clothing is a tradition that dates back for generations. We've already seen some of the things that people will do with denim, but some people take it a step too far.
Denim pants get turned into everything from shorts to chairs, but what do we do with our denim shorts when they no longer have any use? What else? We turn them into denim boots.
21. "It Puts The Lotion On It's Skin"
If someone has an excess of time, and nothing to fill it with, chances are they are going to attempt at least one project that is better left undone. This next one is for all those DIY wine-loving enthusiasts who also happen to have a pit in their basement and a collection of fragrant lotions.
There are not many people who would actually like to see the 21 steps that came between the before and after pictures of making this wine glass, or the person who wrote the tutorial.
22. 'Making Dignity Disappear'
Yet another DIY washroom failure. Got a spare cabinet system laying around and always dreamt of having the experience of a bar washroom at home? The cabinet stall is the answer!
This looks like it's either one of the world's worst magic tricks or a very elaborate prank. There should be a sign on the outside of this thing reminding people to knock first. If the wrong door was opened by accident, it would certainly be a rather unpleasant experience for everyone involved.
23. 'Stepping up To The Challenge'
When attempting large home renovation projects without the help of a professional, it is always important to measure everything more than once. It won't matter how great the carpentry work is if the angle of the stairs is off.
Perhaps a firepole or a rope ladder would have been a better idea. Either one would have saved a lot of time, money, and ridicule.
24. 'That Is Not Art'
Sometimes people think that they are having an amazing artistic breakthrough with their ideas. These people are usually wrong.
I'm not too sure why they needed to have the casing built around the fridge. Is the fridge not rectangular enough or strong enough as it is?
25. 'Penny For Your Thought'
In a place like Dubai, people coat their cars in gold and diamonds in order to show off their statuses in high-society. In America, they use something a little less expensive.
This penny-coated car is a fantastic example of what happens when someone has too much time and too many pennies.
26. 'A Lasting Impression'
Decorating the walls in one's house can lead to some rather difficult decisions, such as where to decorate and what to decorate with. Too many things and a place will look cluttered, too few, and it will look plain and empty.
This gives window art a whole new meaning. For the people who don't have the time or money to waste on wall paintings, just pick the time of day when the sun's silhouette leaves the best imprint on the wall, grab some paint, and make it permanent.
27. 'The Most Versatile Tool In The World'
There are many DIY repairs that are better left undone. Hoping that tape will hold up a pillar that is on the verge of collapse is only slightly worse than expecting tape to hold down a table during a hurricane.
Whoever did the repair work on this pillar has clearly lived by the motto that duct tape can fix anything. "Just make sure it's wrapped around a few times, and we'll sort it out on Monday".
28. 'Stoned Toilet'
I don't know when it became popular to have stone covered...everything, but it has become an odd choice in decor for many households. Stone art and stone appliances have become one and the same in recent years.
A DIY rock garden is a nice idea. A rock toilet...not so much. Cleaning this toilet is not going to be very much fun, especially getting between those hard-to-get places.
29. 'One Slice Or Two?'
"Just finished doing repairs on the washroom and still have some leftover cement? Forgot your partner's birthday...again? Look no further than the Toaster Coaster."
"All it takes is a slice of bread, some cement, and the ability to convince someone that this was actually the plan all along. Never have coffee without a slice of toast again. The Toaster Coaster."
30. 'First Step, Stop Using Denim'
Is it time to redo the stairs again? The old carpet not quite doing it anymore? Don't worry. I'm sure there's some leftover denim somewhere.
What is with everyone's obsession with denim? It looks like someone just threw away a collection of their old denim boots and their neighbor took them in order to upholster these stairs.
31. 'Helping Hand'
The relationships that people have with their cars just aren't what they used to be. Cars used to be an extension of their drivers, but these days car owners mostly use their vehicles for work or to run errands, and not much else. DIY car upgrades are a wonderful way for someone to spend some extra time developing a deeper connection with their car.
Sometimes those connections go a little too far. The hand shift stick is odd enough on its own, but add in the sweater sleeve and we're hanging a left on Batshit Crazy Lane.
32. 'Don't Turn Out The Lights'
The crazy obsession that people have with over-the-top DIY additions, which are meant to make their cars stand out as much as possible, is something that only automobile enthusiasts will ever truly understand.
The owner of this car definitely thought he had a bright idea with this one. These chandelier headlights will help to make anyone's presence known, but will most likely be quite a problem when driving on the highway.
33. 'Is There A Bucket I Can Use Instead?'
The desire for comfort in the washroom is something that everyone has in common but when it comes to DIY projects, please think about the other people who will be using the facilities as well.
If it becomes necessary to wash the toilet seat in the laundry, it may be time to rethink the seat cover. There is no scenario in which a fuzzy toilet seat is a good idea.
34. 'Extra Protein'
Art is open to interpretation and beauty is most certainly in the eye of the beholder, however, when painting the tea set, perhaps think of those who may visit in the future.
While penguins would be cute if painted on the bottom of a teacup, tulips would be beautiful, and a lemon wedge would be rather fitting. But ants? No thank you.
35. 'Knock, Knock. Who's There?'
Building a new barrier fence for the yard could be a fairly expensive endeavor unless of course, the old door impound lot is just down the street.
Every day in this home would be like an episode of 'Most Extreme Elimination Challenge'. Not knowing which door is unlocked on each given day would be maddening.
36. 'Shall We Order A Pizza?'
Having a nice garden is extremely important to some people. They need the whole street, no, the whole neighborhood to know that they care about their garden.
When this husband was asked by his wife to make their garden's border look like the Great Wall of China, I'm not sure that this is what she had in mind. At least the hose is nearby to clean the dishes.
37. "Wax On, Wax Off'
Babybel cheeses are a part of growing up in America. Almost everyone can remember trying to get the cheeses out of those encasings without breaking the wax or squishing the wax into tiny little balls.
This individual made a habit out of turning their Babybel into candles. I'm not sure why anyone would do this more than once. Apparently, people just do weird things sometimes.
38. 'Lettuce Tell You All About It'
Garden lovers everywhere know the pains of not being able to be with their plants at all times. What if the cherry tomatoes or basil get thirsty while we're at work?
In combining their love of auto repairs and gardening, the driver of this Camry has found the solution to all of their problems.
39. 'It Speaks Volumes'
As someone who loves both a good set of kitchen knives and a good book, this DIY knife block is quite hard to stomach.
These books were the casualties of an inter-room household battle for the ages. Captured without a fight due to their desire for peace and not war, they were held hostage for weeks. Knowing they were full of information that they would not divulge, the kitchen made an example out of them.
40. 'It's Getting Hot In Here'
This next DIY car improvement is for the people who don't need a sunroof for its natural purpose, but just in order for others to think they have one.
Few things are better in life than getting into the car and pretending to open the new sunroof. When letting the imaginary sun in through the non-existent hole in the roof, it is a good idea to wear fake sunscreen in order to prevent pretend skin diseases.
